Local Volunteers Help In Texas Storm Recovery

Five volunteers from the Midland Empire Chapter of the American Red Cross are part of the national relief effort sent to Texas as Hurricane Dolly approached the southern coast.

Volunteer Services Director Angie Springs says five volunteers were dispatched to help out.  Springs says they were sent to San Antonio, which is the "safe zone" beyond the expected range of the cyclone.  This group will be among the first to enter the area should it be declared a disaster zone.

The storm was downgraded to a tropical storm after it made landfall, but as much as a foot of rain is expected in some areas.

"Mass care" classes scheduled July 24th by the Midland Empire chapter had to be cancelled because the teachers are among the volunteers in Texas.  Those classes will be rescheduled.

Springs says the course on client services scheduled for Tuesday, July 29th should go on as planned

You will need to register at least a day ahead of time for the classes, which are generally held each month.  To register you can call 816-232-8439.   The classes are held at the chapter headquarters at 401 North 12th Street in St Joseph.
